7 Qualities of a Healthy Relationship

As humans, most of us yearn for fulfilling relationships. They provide us with exciting ways to learn, grow, thrive, and have fun!

Yet, as we know, relationships aren’t always a “bed of roses” especially romantic ones. They don’t just happen! Both parties have to work hard towards the success of the relationship they aspire and one that serves their needs.

A healthy relationship be it romantic, a friendship, family, or work-related is very important for anyone’s wellbeing. They promote emotional and social wellness. But when relationships are unhealthy, you may feel drained, overwhelmed, and invisible.

So, would you know if you are in a healthy relationship? Here is a quick checklist to help you evaluate your relationship.

1. Self Awareness

Having a clear sense of yourself boosts your confidence helping you bring positive energy to a relationship.

Self-awareness is one of the main ingredients for a healthy and meaningful relationship. Being self-aware means taking an honest look at the way you behave and relate with others. It also entails paying close attention to how your mind works and being comfortable with yourself. When you are self-aware you can own your mistakes, fears, and weaknesses and then make a decision to work on them.

A person who does not understand themselves will find it difficult to relate with another person healthily. This will lead to troubled relationships with others.

On the other hand, having a clear sense of yourself boosts your confidence helping you bring positive energy to a relationship. Self-awareness also increases one’s self-esteem making one feel worthy and having respect for oneself. But low self-esteem suggests you don’t love yourself enough and it can greatly impact negatively on your relationships.

It is important to nurture self-awareness if you have already not done so. It is the best gift you can give to yourself and then to others. Being self-aware is empowering and will help you bring respect to your relationships and make the right decisions.

2. Communication

The ability to communicate clearly and comprehend what the other is saying is a very important quality in any relationship.

Communication is the basis of any relationship. The quality of relationships depends on how successful it is. When both partners can comfortably share their feelings, opinions, beliefs, joys, sorrows, fears, they connect deeply and reach a mutual understanding.

The ability to communicate clearly and comprehend what the other is saying is a very important quality in any relationship. It is important to consider the tone and choice of words when communicating to avoid miscommunication or sending wrong signals. Openly discussing the best ways to express your feelings together will help eliminate miscommunication.

Sometimes the lack of openness in communication contributes to the gradual decline of trust, love, and self-respect. Two people may be staying in the same house, but there is chaos in their relationship. That is because there is no open communication.

Miranda Kerr says, “I think for any relationship to be successful, there needs to be loving communication, appreciation, and understanding.”

Therefore, for any relationship to thrive, communication must be strengthened for both parties to feel fully understood, appreciated and have a safe place to voice their true feelings.

3. Equality

Equality is the foundation of a strong healthy relationship. If a partner sees the other as equal, then there will be respect.

But if one sees the other as not worth it can lead to disrespect and one mistreating the other daily. Disrespect is a sign of an abusive relationship that should not be ignored. All persons should have an equal say in the relationship.

4. Independence

Independence is critical in a relationship because both partners need to show up in the relationship as the best versions of themselves. It’s important to have some ‘me’ time in any relationship. Spending time with friends, doing your hobbies and self-care is important to maintain a healthy relationship.

If you live with your partner(s) or friend(s), set up designated areas within your place where you can spend time alone. Independence makes the relationship more intellectually stimulating. When two people bring different topics and interests for discussion it benefits both. If you want to have a healthy balanced relationship it all starts with both parties having their sense of autonomy.

5. Trust

Trust involves feeling safe with the other and being vulnerable with them.

Trust involves honesty and integrity. Trust in your partner is a key component of any healthy relationship. Trust deepens each time a partner makes the other feel seen, heard, and accepted. Each time two people turn toward each other emotionally, trust recharges. One person says, in some way, “I need you,” and the other responds, “I’m here.”

Trust involves feeling safe with the other and being vulnerable with them. You believe that they want the best for you, respect you as a person, and won’t do anything to harm you. What has made you not trust someone? Is it something they did?

6. Support

Being with someone who accepts you as you are and then encourages you to be your best version is a blessing!

Being with someone who accepts you as you are is important. Being with someone who accepts you as you are and then encourages you to be your best version is a blessing! It is important to support each other in one way or another. Support can be emotional like compassion and empathy.

It can also be material and physical. In addition to supporting one another, it’s important to recognize your own needs and communicate boundaries around support.

7. Conflict Resolution

There is conflict in all relationships. There will be instances of disagreements and one can feel angry with the other. It is normal. What is important is how you resolve these issues.

During such times communication comes in handy. If you can talk about your differences politely, honestly, and with respect, you’re on the right track. When you can resolve conflicts successfully, you are developing a healthy and mature relationship.
